I Worked Overnight Security at Green Lawn Cemetery in Ohio. There Are Still Things I Can’t Explain
A few years ago, I worked overnight security at Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio. My shift was 11 PM to 7 AM, and most nights consisted of driving around the property, checking gates, and making sure nobody was trespassing.
For the most part, it was an easy job. But after a few weeks, some strange things started happening.
The first incident happened around 2:30 AM while I was patrolling one of the older sections. I heard someone whistling nearby. It sounded like a person casually whistling a tune, so I stopped my vehicle and rolled down the window.
The whistling immediately stopped.
I got out with my flashlight, thinking someone had snuck onto the property, but couldn’t find anyone. A few nights later, I heard the exact same whistling in roughly the same location.
Another thing that bothered me was the footsteps. Occasionally, when I’d get out to check certain areas, I’d hear what sounded like someone walking through the grass nearby. Whenever I stopped walking, the footsteps stopped too.
One night, I stood completely still for almost a minute. Nothing. But the second I turned around to head back to my vehicle, I heard three distinct footsteps behind me.
I never ran back to my vehicle so fast.
The strangest incident happened sometime in October. I was parked near one of the older mausoleums around 3 AM, finishing some paperwork on my phone, when I heard two knocks against my passenger-side window.
I looked over, but nobody was there.
A few seconds later, another knock. This one was louder.
I got out and checked around the vehicle, thinking maybe a branch had fallen or an animal was nearby. Nothing.
I eventually quit after finding a better-paying job. I never saw a ghost or anything I’d consider definitive proof of something paranormal. Most of what happened probably has a reasonable explanation.
But I’ll never forget my last week there. I was finishing my rounds around 5 AM when I heard that same whistling again, this time directly behind me.
I turned around immediately.
Nobody was there.
I don’t know what caused those noises, and I’m not claiming the cemetery is haunted. But spending eight hours alone in a place like that really messes with your head.
All I know is there were plenty of nights when I was the only person working there, but it sure didn’t feel like I was alone.
